The Mosaic browser was the first widely used web browser in internet history. Released in 1993 by the NCSA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, it was the first browser capable of displaying both images and text in the same window and running on Microsoft operating systems — instantly explosive in popularity. The arrival of Mosaic was one of the sparks that lit the later internet boom.
