The Pacific War (also known as the Greater East Asia War) was fought from December 7, 1941 to September 2, 1945, between the Axis powers led by the Empire of Japan and the Allied powers led by the United States. It began with Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and ended with the atomic bombings and Japan’s declaration of unconditional surrender, spanning the Pacific and Indian Oceans, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. For over seven decades since, the war has continued to shape the political landscape of Asia: Japan’s defeat opened the door for the rise of the Chinese Communist Party, led to the division of the Korean Peninsula, and fueled ongoing territorial disputes in the Pacific region.
