In 1998 Dutch company N2IT launched the software FinalScratch, marking the debut of what would become today’s ubiquitous digital vinyl control system — and fundamentally transforming DJ culture on the dancefloor. By embedding audio timecode into vinyl records, FinalScratch allowed a computer to read changes in direction, speed, and tempo. DJs could now combine the tactile feel previously unique to turntables with computer-based loops, cue points, and audio processing, something that had been impossible before. The number of tracks storable on a laptop also far exceeded the number of physical records any DJ could carry, dramatically expanding flexibility in live selection and mixing.
