The renowned Hong Kong music magazine MCB Music Colony was founded by music critic Yüan Chih-ts’ung in 1994. MCB primarily covered independent, electronic, and alternative non-mainstream music, standing out from music media dominated by pop entertainment. Its principal writer Yüan Chih-ts’ung’s elegant prose and distinctive viewpoints were regarded as the pinnacle of Chinese-language music criticism of the 1990s. In 1996, at the suggestion of Lin Che-yi, MCB Music Colony was introduced to Taiwan, bringing first-hand international music intelligence and playing an important role in advancing music culture in both Hong Kong and Taiwan.
