Between 1987 and 1993, in the years following the lifting of martial law, all manner of social activities began to flourish in Taiwan. Simultaneously, the wealth accumulated during the 1970s and 1980s gave people the economic resources to begin pursuing quality of life and leisure activities. Taiwan’s New Year’s Eve concerts were nurtured in this broader context, and from the moment they appeared they were enthusiastically embraced by the public, a tradition that continues to the present day. From the millennium celebrations of 2000 onwards, almost every county and city government has organised its own New Year’s Eve concert, making it a regular annual fixture. Performers that night fly, helicopter, and race along freeways between multiple venues. New Year’s Eve concerts have also become a symbolic ceremony marking political transitions.
