Pots Weekly was Taiwan’s first “libertarian left-leaning” free newspaper, founded in 1994. Originally part of the arts and culture news centre of The Journalist newspaper, it later became an independently published weekly. Funded by Shih Hsin University on a budget basis — with equipment and printing provided by the school — this allowed the fledgling independent weekly to develop freely without the pressure to turn a profit. However, following various closure threats, in 2014 the university’s board of directors announced the cessation of Pots, citing “reduced funding.” Huang Sun-chuan, who had served as chief editor from the paper’s founding until its final issue, stated that Pots was originally a publication representing the culture of his cohort — the “post-student-movement generation” born in the 1960s. Over the years, new contributors joined and the focus shifted; the editorial spine was always about young people’s intellectual pursuits, social engagement, and cultural expression. Styling itself as “the voice of the degenerate generation,” Huang expressed hope that, following Pots’s closure, a new generation of young people would rise to found a new publication.
