After years of gestation — reflecting on the inadequate state of research, creation, production, presentation, and connection in Taiwan’s existing media arts environment, and seeking to build a long-term, ecological, and reasonable model of creative production — the “Taiwan International Electronic Arts Forum” (TIEAF), organised by Lin Chi-wei, Hsu Ya-chu, and the newly established Graduate Institute of Technological Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts at the end of 2002, was arguably the most revolutionary event since the “Taipei International Post-Industrial Arts Season.” TIEAF sought to expand the possibilities of medium- and long-term cross-disciplinary international collaboration by bringing domestic artists into direct contact with cutting-edge international artists and engineers, while also conducting educational outreach and broadening publicity around the many possible connections between computers and electronic media in technology, communication, broadcasting, entertainment, and art. With less intense physical performance and more attention to sound itself, international musicians and artists not only performed but taught software technique and electronic arts theory across two consecutive days of workshops.
