Mad Songs (Zhua Kuang Ge) is the debut album by Taiwan’s “Black List Workshop” (Hei Ming Dan Gong Zuo Shi), released in 1989. The album cover boldly declares: “This is no empty singing — these are our sweet potato songs.” Because of its fierce ambition to challenge tradition — almost entirely performed in Taiwanese and yet entirely unlike the Taiwanese-language pop music then in the market, instead presented through rock and rap — this album stands in a category of its own in the history of Taiwan’s popular music. Most critics regard it as the first shot fired at the dawn of the “New Taiwanese Song Movement” of the 1990s.
