Long before the word “taike” was hyped by the media, Bloody Pigs (濁水溪公社) released the album Revenge of the Taike in 1999. Its sound fused muscular Western punk rock with popular elements from Taiwan’s rural folk culture — puppet theatre, Taiwanese opera, AM-radio patent-medicine programmes, funeral processions, restaurant variety shows, electric flower-car performances — reversing and recollaging them into what they called “taike.”

Lead singer Ko Jen-chien said in an interview at the time: “We wanted a word to describe this music so we wouldn’t have to keep saying we play some foreign-style punk or grunge, or that we sound like some overseas band. We don’t. Bloody Pigs are nothing like that. We use the word ‘taike’ to describe our attitude to life, our behaviour, our music, our entire way of performing.”
