The third “Fire Dance Festival,” planned by Lin Hung-chang and Wu Chung-liang, was a free outdoor evening concert at Huashan — a fusion of fire and drumming — open to anyone who wanted to perform. An electronic music zone was set up alongside, with domestic and international DJs including @llen and fish. At the time, Huashan was the arts community’s exclusive experimental ground and a creative paradise for artists. The Fire Drum Festival, running until three or four in the morning, was singled out by Taipei city councillors Wang Shih-chien and Yen Sheng-kuan as an occasion where people used “art as a cover for ecstasy,” calling Huashan’s arts zone a “rave heaven” for foreigners. The unfounded accusations provoked outrage and a joint protest petition from the arts community.
