Taipei Vice Crackdown Hits Underground Music Scene

During Chen Shui-bian’s tenure as Taipei mayor in 1996, a sweeping anti-vice campaign was carried out, targeting the “eight major industries” with large-scale enforcement actions. Many livehouses and live pubs, having never been legally distinguished from the eight major industries within Taiwan’s cultural context, were caught in the dragnet; venues such as Scum, B-Side, and Boogie were among those swept up and shut down.
