National Communications Commission (NCC) Established

On 25 October 2005, the Legislative Yuan passed the National Communications Commission Organisation Act at the 7th session of the 2nd meeting period of the 6th Legislature. Article 1 of the Act states: “To uphold freedom of speech as guaranteed by the Constitution, to honour the spirit of withdrawing political parties, government, and military from the media, to promote the sound development of communications broadcasting, to maintain media professional autonomy, to effectively administer communications broadcasting management matters, to ensure fair and effective competition in the communications broadcasting market, to protect consumers and respect the rights of disadvantaged groups, to promote the balanced development of a pluralistic culture, and to enhance national competitiveness, the Executive Yuan hereby establishes the National Communications Commission.” The National Communications Commission (NCC) was subsequently established on 22 February 2006.
