In early 1993, “Sweet Honey” (T’ien-mi-mi), co-run by Wu Chung-wei and Su Ching-ching, opened in a lane off Section 3 of Roosevelt Road in Taipei, gathering many university students who had previously participated in the Wild Lily Student Movement and held left-leaning views. Gradually the space became a gathering place for young artists, little-theatre workers, underground bands, disaffected youth, arts journalists, and intellectuals. “Sweet Honey” quickly made a name for itself through bold and free performances. Wu Chung-wei’s hard-won survival skills accumulated over the years infused “Sweet Honey” with a DIY spirit; Wu continuously transformed the interior using materials salvaged from scavenging, as if creating a giant assemblage artwork.
In 1994, “Sweet Honey” closed, and Wu Chung-wei and friends immediately organised the “Ragged Life Festival.”
